In a small loft in Alphabet City, two brown eyes surveyed their surroundings quietly. It was weird how the absence of one person could make such a difference. Collins sighed as he took the container of milk out of the refrigerator and took a swig even though he knew Angel would yell at him over it. No- Angel wasn’t there to yell at him anymore, she was gone and she wasn’t coming back. Angels funeral service had been a week ago and Collins had been staying with Mark ever since, unable to be alone.
At least that had been the case until this morning when Mark had ungracefully kicked him out. Collins had seriously considered sleeping in Central Park instead of going back to that lonely apartment. He had changed his mind only because he knew that Angel would never approve.
After a few hours of avoiding the bedroom like the plague, he but the bullet and summoned up the courage to enter the abandoned room. He lay across the bed, taking in Angel’s scent and the stars that were visible through the window. He yawned and closed his eyes and for the first time, planned to spend the night in their bed alone.
In an upscale apartment across town, candles were flickering gaily in a darkened bedroom, forgotten as two people comforted each other in the next room.
“How old were you?” Benny asked softly, his hands shaking slightly as he stared down at the paper in front of him.
“Eighteen,” Mimi answered quietly, taking his hands in hers.
An uncomfortable silence filled the air as Benny wiped tears away, determined not to let Mimi see him cry. He was unable to believe that he had been so foolish; this wasn’t worth losing his life over.
“How did you handle it?” Benny asked as Mimi stood up and walked towards the bathroom.
“It’s amazing what a strong will to defy the doctors and death will do,” Mimi said as she returned to the room carrying a cup of water.
“What’s that?” Benny asked as she pressed something into his hand.
“Your first AZT. Welcome to the club,” she said sadly as she watched him swallow the pill.
A few months later in a familiar loft, two best friends were engaged in an act that both would regret come dawn. Roger pushed Mark against the wall, kissing him roughly. He was glad he was no longer in Santa Fe and was instead home with Marl, Collins and Mimi. The latter was the farthest thing from his mind; he was too focused on the blonde that was moaning his name. Mark was amazed that things had got this far out of hand, not that he cared right this moment, Roger was home, that’s all that mattered to him. He kissed Roger as they undressed and made their way towards Mark’s bed. This was the first time they had allowed themselves to lose control completely, and Mark planned on it not being the last.
